Forgiveness is a virtue and the fiancée of Jonathan Ferrell is finding that it’s also the best way to move on from the tragic situation.

Ferrell, the 24-year-old former FAMU football player who was shot 10 times by Officer Randall Kerrick as he was trying to seek help after a car accident, was set to marry Caché Heidel, his fiancée of six years and his high school sweetheart.

The graduate student reflected on her relationship with Ferrell.

“I always called him ‘Sweets’ because he was the sweetest person I ever met,” Heidel said.

And despite the hurt of losing the love of her life, Heidel says she forgives the officer who shot and killed Ferrell.

“I’ve forgiven him,” she said in an interview with NBC News. “I’m not hateful. I understand it. He was scared. It just hurts. Everything went wrong that evening that could possibly go wrong,” she said, choking back tears.

But Heidel feels that Kerrick and the other officers shouldn’t have acted out of fear.

“I felt like if somebody had just taken a step back and really figured out what was going wrong with him they would have known he didn’t cause a threat to anybody,” she said.

According to NBC News, Kerrick was arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter less than 24 hours after the shooting and was released on a $50,000 bond. We’ll keep you updated on the latest in this tragic case.
