It’s a sad day for Family Guy fans.

The popular FOX series has shaken things up by killing off a beloved cast member. The Griffin family dog, Brian, was killed after being hit by a car on Sunday night’s episode. Although his best friend Stewie is usually a time traveling expert, ironically in this episode, he couldn’t repair all the parts to his time machine.

In reality, it would take a family a few weeks to grieve over the death of their dog, but not the Griffins. In the episode, titled “Life Of Brian,” the family went to the local dog pound and adopted a new mutt, who they named Vinny. Vinny is the complete opposite of the monotone and passionate Brian, he’s a tough wise cracker.

According to the DailyMail, executive producer of the animated series, Steve Callaghan, explained their decision to kill off the family pooch, stating:

“This was an idea that got pitched in the writers room and it sort of caught fire, and we thought it could be a fun way to shake things up.

As soon as this idea came up, we started talking about what the next couple episodes could be and we got very excited about the way this change will affect the family dynamics and the characters.”

The show, which was previously canceled due to poor ratings, was brought back to primetime due to high DVD sales, and has since been nominated for several awards, including Emmys.

Tell us, do you think the change of characters will affect the show in a negative or positive way?
