If you know Cher, you know she’s not afraid to say whatever she feels.
So on Thanksgiving, when she engaged in a conversation about Thanksgiving being the “beginning of a great crime” against Native Americans, shit hit the fan.
The legendary singer, who is part Cherokee, told her almost two million Twitter followers that she doesn’t celebrate Turkey Day, and for good reason.
.@slivingston7 I DON’T ! 4 me & my Family,it’s a day,When every1 is free 4Diner & a movie,Not 2 celebrate the beginning of a GREAT Crime😤
— Cher (@cher) November 28, 2013
She continued, elaborating on the crimes against Native Americans and tactics early settlers employed to make sure Native communities wouldn’t survive.
.@RandyMDuBose@slivingston7 Stealing Land, from a ppl,Who believed,Owning LAND Was LIke Owning SKY! We gave them Blankets laced w/Smallpox

And not surprisingly, a lot of her fans just couldn’t understand how Thanksgiving, no matter its origins, could be bad.
I mean, turkey is never bad, but maybe it’s time to put down the drumsticks and pick up a book. Or read Cher’s timeline, apparently.
