On December 19th, 2013 over a dozen young women from the Lower Eastside Girls Club gathered at Vu Hair Salon, located in the Peninsula Hotel, for an evening of women’s empowerment. LifeStyleHer, a forum targeted at the enrichment of the mind, body and soul of women, sponsored the event. The young ladies in attendance were treated to makeovers that included sleek hairstyles and sassy smoky eyes. The discussion, however, was about much more than women taking care of their physical appearance.

Mashonda Tifrere, founder of LifeStyleHer, stressed that although physical appearance is important, taking care of your body is even more important, as it is really the only thing a person has. Special guests included Estelle Fanta Swaray, Julissa Bermudez, Emily Bustamante, Tamika Mallory, Yajaira Velazquez and Laurel Dewitt. All of the guests were extremely passionate about the empowerment of women, especially young women.

The young women from the Lower Eastside Girls Club were extremely happy and appreciative to be the center of such an enriching dialogue. I had the opportunity to talk to many of them about school, their college plans and academic interests. I loved that although they were receiving makeovers, the young women understood that there is much more to life than physical attributes. “Having a good energy is so important,” said Julissa Bermudez. Good energy is something that I also find very imperative to positivity and the energy flowing from Vu Hair Salon that evening was amazing.

“There is no doubt that there are significant gender disparities that plague America and the world at large; however I think support from other women could be a catalyst for change. A room full of women dedicated and passionate about the well being of other women is something that I find intrinsically powerful and the LifeStyleHer.com event was beautiful in that it did just that.”
