Five years after landing her role as the physically and verbally abusive mother in Precious, Mo’Nique is back!

The Oscar-winning actress plans to star alongside Isaiah Washington in Blackbird. The film, directed by Patrik-Ian Polk, is an adaptation of a Larry Duplechan novel. According to Deadline, Washington accepted the lead role in Blackbird fresh off a Gotham Award nomination for his portrayal of the D.C. sniper in Blue Caprice.

Mo’Nique’s role in the film is surprisingly not a far cry from her character in precious. She plays a Mississippi native who is active in the church and the mother of two children, one girl and one boy. After struggling with his sexuality, Mo’Nique’s son comes to terms with the fact that he’s gay; This doesn’t sit well with conservatives in his small southern town. Coincidentally, the boy’s sisters turns up missing around the same time, which his mother blames him for.

Blackbird is a film about the choices people are forced to make as they struggle to figure out how to be themselves,” said Sydney Hicks, the film’s director and Mo’Nique’s husband. “And why should just being who you are be a struggle? Since Mo’Nique won the Oscar, we have recieved a flood of scripts, but nothing captured out attention until Isaiah – who we have a high level of respect for – sent us Blackbird. We became instant fans of Patrick-Ian Polk and knew we had to get behind this important film.”

We can’t wait to see what Mo’Nique brings to the table this time! Blackbird isn’t the only important film in the works for 2014! Sony Pictures recently launched a first-look at The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and trust us – you’re not going to want to miss this one!
