When will this all end?

Tragedy is rising in Chi-town, as 20 people have been injured – as well as 2 killed – in a span of just 12 hours, this occurring only two weeks after the Windy City experienced a string of shootings during Fourth of July weekend.

11-year-old Shamiya Adams was one of the victims who was tragically killed by a gunshot through the head, all while she was making smores during a friend’s sleepover in Chicago’s West Garfield Park.

Chicago Police Department spokesperson Officer Jose Estrada said:

Adams was in a first floor bedroom when gunshots came in through the window, originating from somewhere outside the house.

The little girl was sent to Mount Sinai Hospital shortly after the shooting, where she was pronounced dead.

Between the hours of 3 P.M and 3:30 A.M, 22 people were shot, 2 of them resulting in deaths. The second homicide occured in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood, where a man was found dead with multiple gun shot wounds. Police are currently investigating both homicides.

Chicago police call these tragic occurrences “unacceptable” and state that “there is clearly much more work to be done.” Yes, clearly.

Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy states:

We will keep building on our strategy, putting more officers on the street in summer months, proactively intervening in gang conflicts, partnering with community leaders.

Our prayers go out to the city of Chicago. This is truly horrific.
