At just 15 years old, Chanel Iman captured the fashion world’s imagination with a third place win in the 2006 Ford Supermodel contest. And now, eight years later, the beautiful and talented model shows no signs of slowing down.

Whether she’s dancing the tango with A$AP Rocky on the cover of the September issue of Vogue, sitting pretty in photoshoots, or exploring the realm of dramatic arts, Chanel is definitely busier than ever.

Recently, Chanel sat down with VIOLET GREY, where they conducted a character study (of sorts) on the model herself. Keep reading for excerpts from the interview.

On learning to say no:

“When I first started [modeling] I was very young. I was like this little doll that everyone just played with. So I could look really good or really horrible depending on who got their hands on me. But as you grow as a model, you figure out what works for you and you learn to say, ‘Ok, you can’t do this, you have to DO this.’ People can think you’re being a diva but you’re not. I used to go to bed crying because I knew I could look better than how they were making me look. So I had to learn how to stand up for myself in that way.”

On her model upkeep:

“When I know I have a huge shoot, I’ll just go into the sauna and steam out my face. Product-wise, I don’t really do much because I sometimes think products make me break out . I just use normal soap and water and moisturizer. My brows are really important to me but I’ve never plucked or waxed them. I’ll just fill them in with Anastasia brow kit.”

On what’s next:

“I’m 23 right now and I feel like I’m still trying to figure it out. Maybe in another two years I’ll have it all together. So maybe 25 is the age at which a woman feels her most beautiful just because she’s survived her teenage years and early twenties.”
