“Feminist” took a life of its own this year with many celebrities finding their inner feminist and speaking out on gender issues. However, that didn’t stop TIME magazine from placing the word on its annual Word Banishment list.

After backlash from the good people of the interwebs, TIME has lifted the ban and issued a statement on their joke gone terribly wrong.

IBT Times reports:

Nancy Gibbs, the magazine’s managing editor, penned an apology that is included as an editor’s note above the article.

“Time apologizes for the execution of this poll; the word ‘feminist’ should not have been included in a list of words to ban. While we meant to invite debate about some ways the word was used this year, that nuance was lost, and we regret that its inclusion has become a distraction from the important debate over equality and justice.”

While the magazine claims the word is un-banned, the term remains on the list with the following description.

TIME continues its reasoning behind the word ban:

You have nothing against feminism itself, but when did it become a thing that every celebrity had to state his or her position on whether this word applies to them, like some politician declaring a party? Let’s stick to the issues and quit throwing this label around like ticker tape at a Susan B. Anthony parade.

Other words included on the ban list are “bae,” “yasss,” “kale,” “bossy,” and “basic.”  The results of the poll are set to be released on Wednesday, November 19.
