Soon, Twitter may allow you to really get these tweets off.

According to the New York Times, Twitter is considering upping the character limit to 5,000, or possibly even 10,000 – just like a Direct Message. The company is said to be targeting a launch date sometime around March. The project is internally known as Beyond 140, and the character limit may fluctuate before the official release.

While users will welcome the option to tweet longer messages, it may also take away the novelty of Twitter: its brevity. Tweets will appear as they do now, displaying just 140 characters, but some sort of “Read More” button will be available. CEO Jack Dorsey has been looking for ways to breathe new life into the nearly decade-old service, and this may be it.

With the company willing to change a drastic part of its initial appeal, there’s no telling what else could be up its sleeve.
