This is a sad day for hip-hop.

Legendary DJ Big Kap, who’s been a pillar in the New York rap scene, has died. DJ Funkmaster Flex confirmed his death on Instagram after posting a tribute to the late DJ.

In 1999, Funkmaster Flex and DJ Big Kap dropped their acclaimed compilation album, The Tunnel, which featured everyone from Tupac and Biggie, to Jay Z and the Ruff Ryders.

There are no details surrounding Big Kap’s death, but many celebrities and friends expressed their condolences on social media.

Kap felt the love and support long before his passing. Cipha Sounds told Global Grind he owes all his success to Big Kap, because he would always show up late to his slot at The Tunnel when Cipha was interning at Hot 97. Check out the story below.

RIP, DJ Big Kap.
