Bill Gates appeared to side with the Feds in the ongoing battle between Apple and the FBI.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Gates explained that Apple CEO Tim Cook is “mischaracterizing” the feud, which started when the FBI requested they unlock the iPhone of deceased San Bernardino terrorist, Syed Farook.

“It is no different than … should anybody ever have been able to tell the phone company to get information … should anybody be able to get at bank records,” said Gates.

Thus far, Cook has refused to give into the government’s demand, claiming that building a back door to break into the smartphone could cause future hacks to occur on a number of devices.

Gates’ decision to go against the majority of the tech industry certainly came as a surprise, as his fortune amounted from the founding of Microsoft. However, Gates is now “disappointed” by reports that he is backing the government.

During an appearance on Bloomberg, Gates said:

“I was disappointed because that doesn’t state my view on this.”

“Clearly the government’s taken information historically and used it in ways that we didn’t expect…I do believe there are sets of safeguards where the government shouldn’t have to be completely blind. “

Which side of the debate are you on?
