The Roots Picnic has been a staple in Philadelphia for the last nine years and every spring, people swarm the state to see some of their favorite acts perform up close and personal.
After this weekend’s festival, the famous group made the major announcement that the Roots Picnic will be expanding to New York City. According to reports, the event is being produced by Live Nation and Maverick in partnership with the Bryant Park Corporation and will be curated entirely by the Roots.
The first night headliners will include D’Angelo and John Mayer, while the second night, billed as a “Love Letter to NYC,” will be headlined by the entire Wu-Tang Clan, David Byrne, and Nile Rodgers, all backed by the Roots. Swizz Beatz, Jeremih, Kevin Gates, X Ambassadors, Trombone Shorty, and EPMD are also scheduled to perform.
Roots co-founder and drummer Questlove told Billboard, “New York is a second home to us. There’s going to be pop up shops there, really good curated food, comedy, DJ parties there and acts that you wouldn’t expect. We’re deeply involved in everything, from the grass area to the food you’re gonna eat to the music you’re gonna hear in between. We’re a part of all of that.”
The show will take place on October 1st and 2nd. Tickets will go on sale Friday, June 10 at 10 a.m. at Ticketmaster.com.
