Denzel Washington is an OG veteran in Hollywood and knows a thing or two about the inner workings of the business.

In a new 60 Minutes interview, the Oscar-winning actor opened up about one of the main issues plaguing the entertainment industry today: the lack of diversity. Just a year after the #OscarsSoWhite controversy shook Hollywood, Denzel is using his much-needed voice to weigh in on the drama as awards season rolls around again.

When asked about the criticism of the Oscars’ lack of diversity, he revealed, “I don’t have to think about it, I’ve lived it. I’ve been the guy at the Oscars without my name being called, I’ve been the guy at the Oscars when my name is called, I’ve been at the Oscars when everybody thought they were going to call my name and they didn’t. I’ve lived it.”

On the advice he’d give to people claiming that the award show is discriminatory and unfair, he said, “Yeah and so what? Give up? If you’re looking for an excuse, you’ll find one. You can find it wherever you’d like. You can’t live like that. Just do the best you can do.”

Several actors of color have had roles in major films this year, so many people believe that the two-year stint of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences only nominating White actors in the acting categories will come to an end.
