A video of Rocky’s real thoughts about XXL’s 2012 Freshmen Class surfaced today, and I must say I have to agree with him 100 percent.
When asked about the controversy surrounding his absence from XXL’s 2012 Freshmen Cover, Rocky aired out his true feelings.
“Personally, I’ma speak my mind. A lot of those motherf*ckers on the list are corny as f*ck, but um, shout out to Danny Brown.”
Not to negate the influence XXL’s Freshmen Class series has on hip-hop and the opportunity it provides to rappers who otherwise may never have platform, but XXL isn’t the sole curator of what’s hot in hip-hop.
And if a rapper thinks he or she is too hot to share the cover with 9 other hopeful, barely famous rappers, than that’s their prerogative.
Some “Freshman” rappers are bigger than a hip-hop magazine cover, bigger than a declaration by music’s most notable insiders, and bigger than the opinionated bloggers whose cynical jaded point of views are skewed by bias obligations.
Rappers like Drake and Nicki Minaj passed on XXL’s Freshmen Issue, because when their turn arrived, they’re movements were bigger than the cover.
Yes, XXL is a good look for 75 percent of the rappers that grace its Freshman Class cover, but it’s not for everybody.

Of course, A$AP Rocky’s absence from the cover was felt, but I think it was a good move for him.
He doesn’t need a co-sign by a music organization to know he has his own cult following.
And after being on tour with Drake and Kendrick Lamar on the Club Paradise tour, I’m sure his fanbase has extended by hundreds of thousands- simply by sharing the stage with Drizzy.
Calling “a lot” of the rappers on the 2012 cover “corny as f*ck” is a jab, but sh*t, who said the truth doesn’t hurt?
That’s one of the biggest problems in hip-hop today.
Blatant honesty isn’t respected anymore, bullsh*t is, and Rocky isn’t sparing anyone’s feelings to be politically correct, and he shouldn’t have to.
With the exception of a few, Don Trip, Future, Machine Gun Kelly, and Danny Brown, the 2012 Freshmen class is surprisingly mediocre.
I like artists like French Montana and Roscoe Dash, but it’s debatable if they should even be present on the “freshman” issue, since they’ve been making bangers for a few years now.
At the end of the day, I do believe A$AP Rocky has plenty of room for growth musically, but his progress isn’t reliant on a title.
If A$AP Rocky aspires, however humbly, to the condition of his art (music) than his “corny as f*ck” statement should carry its own justification.
