Chicago isn’t the only city dealing with rampant gun violence taking away their youth.

DETAILS: We Pray! Frances Colon Is Clemente High’s 3rd Student To Die In Chicago Shootings This Year

An 18-year-old student was shot in Prince George’s County, Md., making this the sixth death of a student since the school year started. Another student, also 18-years-old, was shot and is in grave condition.

The students were shot just minutes after a news conference on gun violence on Tuesday afternoon and just one day after a 15-year-old student was shot over a pair of shoes he was delivering to his girlfriend for Valentine’s Day.

The deceased was a freshman at Suitland High, police said. He was the second student at that school student shot and killed in a two-day span, and the sixth Prince George’s County student killed this school year.

His name has not been publicly released.

“Words can’t describe what I feel today,” Suitland High School algebra teacher Cindy Jones told News4. “…I am trembling right now with grief. This has got to stop somewhere!”

The students, both males, were found in a parking lot at an apartment complex in the 3700 block of Donnell Drive shortly after 5:30 p.m.

“We are horrified to learn that tragedy struck another one of our students within a 24-hour time-span,” a statement from Prince George’s County Public Schools said Tuesday. “Our hearts are broken again and we extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family. We cannot go another day without addressing these unspeakable acts of violence against our students. We are asking for the community’s support as our students, teachers and employees cope with these incidents.”

Since August, five other students have been killed. They include:

  • Charles Michael Walker Jr., 15, was shot and killed over a pair of sneakers. He attended Suitland High School.
  • Amber Stanley, 17, was shot and killed in her own bed. She attended Charles H. Flowers High School.
  • Marckel Ross, 18, was shot and killed while on his way to school. He attended Central High School.
  • Marcus Jones, 16, was shot and killed after a weekend house party. He attended Friendly High School.
  • Eliezer Reyes, 14, was killed in a drive-by shooting. The Gazette reports he had attended Nicholas Orem Middle School, but had switched recently to Foundations School in Largo — an independent school for students with emotional and behavioral disabilities.

At a news conference shortly before Tuesday’s double shooting, police said they are developing a strategy to prevent youth violence that includes partnerships in the community.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving families.
