According to Aurora Police officials, Holmes is a local resident of the community and lived only a few miles away.

CBS News reports that Holmes wore what appeared to be a bulletproof vest and riot-type mask as he opened fire in a movie theater with three weapons at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises.

A San Diego woman who identified herself as James Holmes’ mother told ABC News she had awoken unaware of the shooting and had not yet been contacted by authorities. She immediately expressed concern that her son may have been involved.

“You have the right person,” she said, apparently speaking on gut instinct. “I need to call the police… I need to fly out to Colorado.”

After capturing Holmes in the parking lot of the Century 16 Movie Theaters, police searched his car.

When officials searched Holmes’ home, they found that his residence was “booby-trapped,” and police saw what looked like “buckets of extra ammunition” and some kind of chemical inside his home.

According to Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates, Holmes had spoken of “possible explosives in his residence.”

Police recovered four guns at the theater, including two pistols, a shotgun and what is believed to be an assault rifle; authorities also recovered a gas mask.
