Russia’s latest natural disaster was out of this world – Literally.

On Friday morning, a meteor streaked through the skies above Russia’s Ural region and exploded with a spectacular flash and boom that shattered glass buildings and unfortunately left more than 950 people injured.

The number of injured continues to rise, as new reports come in from across the area. The majority of those people have had to seek medical attention.

Vladimir Stepanov, of the National Center for Emergency Situations at the Russian Interior Ministry, said that 270 buildings have sustained damage so far.

The Russian Academy of Science reports that the meteorite weighed 10 tons before it entered Earth’s atmosphere.

Many who witnessed the initial blast took amateur video showing the bright white streak moving across the sky.

The national space agency said scientists believed one meteoroid had entered the atmosphere, where it burned and disintegrated into fragments.

Scientists are denying that the meteor shower has anything to do with a hefty asteroid that is due to pass Earth at a pretty close range today.

Hmmm…we’re still a little skeptical about that one! Eyes to the sky!
