The community of Sanford, FL has been thrust into the spotlight for the last 40 days as the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin continues to dominate the media. Now many believe a powder gage of racial tension is about to explode.

Last night, six shots were fired into an empty police cruiser in the same neighborhood where Trayvon was killed, prompting Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett to declare that the town has become a “kindling box.”
No one was injured in the 4:30 a.m. shooting at the Retreat at Twin Lakes in Sanford, Fla. Police removed the vehicle and have begun an investigation.
Tensions continue to rise in the small middle class city and according to ABC News, it could soon reach a boiling point.
The emergency operation centers of three counties have been activated at Level II, the same level of preparedness used ahead of a hurricane.
Triplett told ABC News:
“Are we a kindling box? Sure, but we’re working down a path and so far it’s been absolutely peaceful.”
He noted the city hopes to avoid conflict violence, even allowing protesters to blockade the police department Monday and shut it down.
Trayvon was shot and killed by neighborhood watchman, 28-year-old George Zimmerman. Trayvon was returning from a local 7-Eleven after buying a bag of Skittles and iced tea.
He was then spotted by Zimmerman while returning to his father’s girlfriend’s home inside their gated community. Zimmerman called 911, explaining that Trayvon, who was wearing a hoodie at the time, a pair of blue jeans, and red/white sneakers, looked suspicious.
Zimmerman pursued Trayvon even after he was told not to by the 911 dispatcher.
When Zimmerman approached Trayvon, the two got into a scuffle, resulting in Trayvon taking a bullet to the chest at point blank range.
Zimmerman claimed that he shot Trayvon on grounds of self-defense, although Trayvon was unarmed.
Since the murder of Trayvon, the entire nation has expressed outrage.
George Zimmerman has not been arrested yet as more evidence comes forward proving that his claims of self-defense were false.
