It’s been a week since Steubenville, Ohio teens Ma’lik Richmond, 16, and Trenton Mays, 17, were convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl while she was unresponsive. But the public is finally getting the scoop on what bystanders really saw on that horrific night.

This weekend, ABC aired an interview of the two boys that was taken shortly before their trial, which shows witnesses being questioned by authorities about what exactly happened that night.

Farrah Marcino, a 16-year-old friend of the victim, told authorities:

“I could tell that she was gradually getting more drunk and worse throughout the night,” adding, “Just, like, that she couldn’t, like, she didn’t walk.”

She also told police that despite the fact she and her friends told the victim, who was drunk, not to go with Mays, it didn’t work.

“Like, we just kept trying to tell her: ‘You don’t want to do this. You don’t want to go with them.’ I just let her do what she want[ed].”

She quickly added that she understands that that was wrong.

Another witness, 18-year-old Anthony Craig, told detectives that he took photos at the home where the assault occurred, but that they were deleted.

He described the victim as “a mess,” saying, “she wasn’t responding.” Craig informed police that when Mays and Richmond carried the victim out of the house, “she was passed out.”

There’s no doubt that the testimony and statements from these witnesses led to the prosecution of the two minors, but it also painted a grim picture of how a lot of situations like these end up with bystanders refusing to intervene.

We’ve got to do better.
