It would be hard to tell the story of hip-hop over the last 15 years without mentioning Aubrey ‘Drake’ Graham. Since he bursted onto the scene in 2009 (he released Room for Improvement in 2006 and Comeback Season in 2007) with his mixtape So Far Gone, the 36 year-old has been the epitome of a hit maker. In fact, it’s safe to say that he’s a legendary and historic hit maker, especially considering the feat he accomplished this week. On Monday (September 25), Drake’s new track, ‘Slime You Out’ featuring SZA (this is her second number one Billboard hit after ‘Kill Bill’ made it there earlier this year) debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated Sept. 30).
‘Slime You Out’ becomes the 12th Drake hit to reach number one status. Along with this milestone, the track becoming number one adds to an already extensive list of records that the Toronto native holds. Champagne Papi extended his mark for the most number one debuts with eight, the most top five hits with 37, the most top tens with 70, the most top 40 hits with 178 and the most overall entries in the chart’s history with 299. Drake also now holds the title of having the most top three hits with 27 after being locked in a tie with the Beatles. By earning his 12th number one, Drake is now tied with Madonna and the Supremes for the fifth-most of all time. The only artists he’s trailing are The Beatles (who have 20), Mariah Carey (who has 19), Rihanna (who has 14) and Michael Jackson (who has 13). That’s some very good company!
The five-time Grammy-Award winner has a catalog that go toe to toe with just about anybody. Whether it’s on the catchy dancehall and afrobeats track One Dance, the Future and Young Thug collaboration Way 2 Sexy or the motivational anthem God’s Plan, Drake has always delivered. He has been credited for popularizing singing and R&B sensibilities in hip hop. He has been a huge influence on many of the current artists of this younger generation. To celebrate Drake’s latest milestone, we put together a gallery of all 12 of his Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers. Slide in the comments and let us know which songs are your favorites!
