Noted fashion photographer Irving Penn has been photographing Japanese design master Issey Miyake for years. Did we mention the two have never met?

Based in NYC Penn would photograph Miyake’s masterpieces whenever they arrived by courier from Japan, and the results were often spectacular.

So much so that rare images of the work, in the form of books and advertisements, are sought after on ebay.

A collection of the cross continental 13 year collaboration between the two giants will go on view in Tokyo next month as “Irving Penn And Issey Miyake: Visual Dialogue.”

Under the direction of Miyake’s trusted colleague, Midori Kitamura and an installation design by architect Shigeru Ban, the exhibition features both the individual and collaborative work of the two men, along with an animated film by Pascal Roulin and original drawings by Michael Crawford. It’s a must see and we have a gallery of some of the images from the exhibition. Enjoy!
