Here’s some sobering news about 2014 — in the first 14 school days of the year, there were at least seven school shootings. To put things in perspective, there were 28 school shootings in all during 2013. That means America has averaged a school shooting every other day since Jan. 1. Crazy. A sibling argument in a small Illinois town turned deadly when a 14-year-old girl stabbed her 11-year-old sister more than 30 times with a kitchen knife. Police in the village of Mundelein say the suspect stabbed her sister because she did not appreciate the cooking and other chores the suspect performed around the home they shared with their mother. A juvenile court judge approved a first-degree murder charge Wednesday, but prosecutors said they had not determined whether they would seek to have the case moved to adult court. Read about it here…[USAToday]

Immigrants might not be granted citizenship in America, but apparently they can be eligible for the death penalty. On Wednesday, Texas executed Mexican citizen Edgar Tamayo Arias, 46, despite objections from Mexico, a former Texas governor and U.S. Secretary of State John F. Kerry, who all argued that Tamayo had been deprived of his rights. As a foreign citizen, he should have been informed of his right to diplomatic assistance under an international treaty known as the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.
