Parents of students at Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science (MS)² in D.C. are speaking out after teachers were fired for allegedly teaching African-American history.

According to ABC 7, parents attended the charter school with their children to slam the school’s new principal for her decision to fire a number of teachers weeks after the semester began. Parents are accusing Principal Angelicque Blackmon of giving out pink slips to three teachers in front of their students.

Those given the boot were three social studies teachers who implemented African-American history into their curriculum.

“The school administration does not want the social studies teachers to teach African-American history,” said parent Shannon Settle. “We are on the campus of an HBCU [Historically Black Colleges and Universities]. We need to know our culture; the school is 90-percent African American.”

To make matters worse, some parents claimed students were crying as they watched their favorite teachers escorted off campus by the police.

“While students are still present in the classroom? How unprofessional,” said parent Delrica Battle. “These children are crying. They said they couldn’t say goodbye. The teachers are upset, the students are upset.”

They were all escorted out by police officers, because they were trying to teach us things about our African heritage,” said seventh-grade student Kameron Gains-Gillens.

Blackmon reportedly adopted the Montgomery, GA school curriculum system and didn’t want children to learn about Kwanzaa and prolific African-Americans like Marion Barry. Blackmon hasn’t addressed the allegations, but did meet with parents yesterday.
