As we’re minutes away from the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, we’re sad to inform you that Prince’s former protege, Denise “Vanity” Matthews, has died at 57 years old.

TMZ Reports:

Vanity, whose real name was Denise Katrina Matthews, passed away in a Fremont, CA hospital on Monday … according to sources close to her family. A few months ago she set up a GoFundMe page, and said she’d been diagnosed with sclerosis encapsulating peritonitis — an inflammation of the small intestines.

She also battled crack addiction in the 90s, and after a 1994 OD her kidneys were shot. She had to undergo nearly daily dialysis treatments.

Vanity became popular in the early ’80s when the group’s Prince-produced song “Nasty Girl” became a smash hit.

In 1983, Motown Records offered the sultry front woman a solo deal, and subsequently, Vanity decided to leave the group. By the mid-90s, Vanity quit music and became a born-again Christian. It’s being reported that the “Drive Me Wild” singer attended church Saturday evening and announced to the congregation that she was “ready to go home.”

Friend and fellow artist Sheila E also confirmed Vanity’s passing on Twitter.

This is a developing story.
