The only thing missing from The Great Gatsby trailer’s opening line is that the fashion was also just about the best we’ve ever seen.
Like history, fashion has a way of repeating itself and although we are undoubtedly in the era of ’90s grunge resurgence, there are some moments from the Roaring Twenties that we just can’t let slip through our little lace gloved fingers.
With the long-awaited movie based off F. Scott Fitzgerald’s tale of grandiose love, lavish living and dark secrets starring Leonardo DiCaprio rolling out in theatres tomorrow, of course we felt compelled to take a look at just how some of that Gatsby-inspired fashion still reigns true today.
From Daisy Buchanan’s poised flapper flair, to Gatsby’s rebellious suits, here are 6 fool-proof fashion lessons to learn from The Great Gatsby that reign true today.
1. Giving gloves a little formal love isn’t always a bad thing.
Kim Kardashian caught hell and more when she donned a gloved dress on the red carpet for the 2013 MET Gala, but Beyonce, Kerry Washington, Madonna and Leelee Sobieski also all opted to cover their digits Daisy Buchanan-style. The lesson here: It’s totally OK to be a flapper on any and all red carpets.
2. Head wraps have a place off the beach.
We’ve seen personalities from Paris Hilton to Kim Kardashian and the fashion forward Olsen sisters putting a little fabric flair into their looks with headbands, but Daisy’s sleek pixie paired with the right width scarf gives us preppy fashion vibes that we shockingly love. 3. A good suit makes the man.
At one point in the film, Daisy looks longingly at that dapper ass Gatsby and says, “You always look so cool. The man in the cool beautiful suits.” Chances are if Gatsby was dressing dumpy, but still throwing these magnificent parties, people would still love him. But you know what makes his mystique intriguing? Damn good suits. We’re pretty sure that will never change.
4. Speaking of suits, don’t be afraid to experiment with color.
Gatsby’s pink suit was of much importance when it came to sticking it to the man. A pink suit meant he was showy and didn’t really give a fuck if his upbringing was questioned. Modern day Robert Pattinson and Ryan Gosling have been two who aren’t afraid to ditch the navy and black world of suits.
5. Pile on the accessories.
Seriously, headdresses, faux furs, feathers, diamonds, pearls, what the heck, you only live once! Daisy was the epitome of glamour and saved none of her jewels for a rainy day, much like we aren’t afraid to pile up arm candy modern day.
6. Go for nude…and glitter…and ALWAYS diamonds.
Few things are much better than being nude and covered in jewels. However amongst those very few things are nude dresses with embellished illusion panels. We have seen the likes of Kerry Washington at the Golden Globes, Jennifer Lopez at the Oscars and of course, Taylor Swift (at almost every award show) donning this look.
