Detroit 1-8-7 is a new drama series that will appear on ABC this fall in the tradition of Law & Order and CSI meet The Office. A documentary film crew follows around a Detroit homicide unit of detectives to get a real sense of what the city of Detroit is all about, the city with the highest murder rate in the country is under the microscope in this new police drama.

But it’s nowhere near reality. For one thing it’s being shot in Atlanta. For another their police code “1-8-7″ indicates a murder call only in California. Even if it is a drama for television, we still remember young Aiyana Jones losing her life because a television crew had been following a special-response team for the A&E reality show The First 48, which chronicles police departments on the trail of homicide suspects, and do to police officers being amped up one of their weapons discharged and killed Aiyana. Is this art imitating reality? Is it in good taste for the show to be aired? Should they pull the plug on Detroit 1-8-7?

The show is playing on the fact that Detroit’s auto industry is gone and the new assembly line is solving the numerous homicides that plague the city, as the actress in the opening scene says; “Get them solved and make room for the next one, we might be the last assembly line in Detroit” . Take a look at the the trailer and tell us what you think.
