A 62-foot-tall statue of Jesus in Monroe, Ohio burned to the ground during a thunderstorm around 11:15 p.m. Monday night. Nicknamed “Touchdown Jesus” because of his raised arms, the statue stood at the evangelical Solid Rock Church in Monroe. Made of fiberglass and plastic foam, the statue quickly became one of Ohio’s most well known landmarks after it was erected in 2004.

Lawrence Bishop, the founder of Solid Rock Church, hoped that the figure of Jesus would serve as a beacon of hope to all who saw it, and the church spent around $250,000 to build it. The “King of Kings” statue seemed to meet its purpose. So many visitors stopped to view it that Solid Rock Church had to build a separate walkway for onlookers.
