With his recent call for the release of imprisoned Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, Salman Rushdie continues his bond with art and artists by acquiring a special painting.

The painting is by the New York artist Victor Matthews, who when reached by phone, told GlobalGrind, “I was surprised how good of an eye for painting he has.”

Rushdie visited the painter’s New York studio this week and acquired a large painting from the Matthews’ series “unitled (ICE).”

Matthews’ work has been collected by Forest Whitaker, Russell Simmons, Brice and Helen Marden and institutions like Nuovo Icona in Venice, Italy, The New School in New York and Museum Ludwig in Cologne. Examples of Matthews’ work may be found on the next pages.
