There’s this new craze that has people going nuts, it’s called planking.

Planking is when you lay face down with your arms at the sides of the body, positioned like a plank on an old pirate ship, hence the name.

This new phenomenon has everyone from athletes to actors showing off their planking skills. So how exactly do you plank? It’s fairly simple, you lay down, put both your arms at your sides with your face down and make sure someone takes a picture of you doing it.

How did this planking thing get started? About 15 years ago, two teenagers would run around England lying down in random places. It was first called the “Laying down game.”

In 2008, the game got remixed by some Southern Australia fans and they named it planking. From 2008 to now, the game has taken off, even spawning a Facebook page.

Planking is all together safe but it depends where you do it. In Australia, a 20-year-old man fell from a balcony railing while a friend photographed him. You should plank with caution, preferably not in high places or around fires, moving cars, bridges; pretty much any place that will cause death.

In honor of national planking day, take a look at some people getting their plank on!
