It’s that time of year again and the anticipation can be felt throughout New York City. Flags are already in the air in a celebratory fashion for one of the biggest displays of Puerto Rican pride ― The National Puerto Rican Day Parade. 

The parade will take place this Sunday (June 12) and in celebration, here is a list of notable Puerto Rican musicians including J. Lo and more. Boricuas stand up!

This Puerto Rican princess burst onto the music scene with famous hits such as “If You Had My Love” and “Waiting For Tonight” and remixes to “Ain’t It Funny” and “I’m Real.”

Over a decade later, Jennifer Lopez is still at it, producing records like “On the Floor” and scoring a role as one of the judges on “American Idol.”

Marc Anthony, who also happens to be J.Lo’s husband, is no novice when it comes to musicianship. For over two decades, Anthony has been making contributions to American and Latin music. The Puerto Rican singer has spawned hits such as “I Need To Know” and “My Baby You.”

Though she is commonly known as a radio personality, Angie Martinez began dabbling at rapping in the ’90s, launching her music career. Martinez was featured on popular songs such as “Not Tonight” and even had her own successful singles like “If I Could Go” and “Mi Amor” which featured Jay-Z.  If you want to know how to say “my love” in Spanish, just ask Martinez.

Taking the rap game by storm, Big Pun represented for the Boricuas with hit after hit including, “I’m Not a Player,” “100%,” and “It’s So Hard,” which foreshadowed his untimely death.  Prior to his death in 2000, Pun joined forces with rapper Fat Joe, becoming a member of a group of New York bred rappers called Terror Squad.

As his right hand man, Fat Joe took over repping for the Boricuas after Pun’s death.  Founder of the Terror Squad, Joe worked with an all-star lineup of musicians including Ashanti, J.Lo, Eminem and R.Kelly. Since the ’90s, he’s made hits such as “What’s Luv,” “We Thuggin” and “I Want You,” as well as had everyone leaning back with probably his most infamous song “Lean Back.”  Nearly 20 years later and still in the game, Joe is shooting a video for his track “Drop A Body.”

Half Puerto Rican, Bruno Mars garnered notoriety with chart-toppers like “Just the Way You Are” and “Nothin’ On You” and warmed hearts with the ballad “Grenade.”  In a short time, he has already taken the music world by storm.

Reggaeton artist Daddy Yankee is known for making hits both in the Latin American and American mainstream music. His popular single “Gasolina” exploded on the airwaves and his albums flourished on the charts.

Since the launch of his career in the mid 2000’s, Joell Ortiz has released an album and four mixtapes.  His singles include “Hip Hop,” “Call Me (She Said),” and the 2010 “So Hard.”

Lumidee took over the radio with her debut single “Never Leave” in 2003. The single reached high proportions, snagging the No. 3 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Similarly to Lumidee, twin duo Nina Sky blew up with their first single. “Move Ya Body,” reached the No.4 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Switching to Reggaeton, the duo collaborated with rapper N.O.R.E. on popular single “Oye Mi Canto.”

Noreaga, also known as N.O.R.E, is half Puerto Rican and has worked with artists such as Busta Rhymes, Big Pun, Kool G Rap, Nas and Mase.  He has spawned hits such as “Nothin’,” and “Oye Mi Canto” and was featured on Mase’s popular track “Lookin’ At Me.”

This Puerto Rican singer was “Livin’ La Vida Loca” with his breakthrough single which garnered him the No.1 spot on the charts in the United States as well as other countries. Ricky Martin has since continued spiraling out hits in both America and Latin America.
