50 Cent debuted his hair-do in style with a crispy new suit. 50’s jheri curl is really a s-curl, which isn’t necessarily a better hair choice.
What’s beneficial to 50’s new schnazzy s-curl is that he now joins an all-star hall of fame for hairstyles that should have never been created.
Everyone from Michael Jackson to Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg and Rick James have rocked a jheri/s-curl in their hey day. A hey day that was probably a decade ago.
So GlobalGrind knows that some of you are trying to figure out the difference between a jheri curl and a s-curl, so here’s the break down.
The jheri curl was invented by a hairdresser named Jheri Redding, go figure. Characterized by a loose, high-glossy, often wet and juicy curls, this two-step hair process was the hair craze among African-Americans.
Whether you were poor living in the hood or Michael Jackson, if you were black in the late ’80s and early ’90s, it’s highly likely that you tried to put a jheri curl in your hair once or twice. Jheri was so crazy, it almost cost Michael Jackson his life.
Now, the s-curl is the more reserved slightly cooler cousin of jheri. Trademarked by its mash-up of straightening the hair, while spicing it up with a slight curl, the s-curl was a hair hit in the ’90s.
GlobalGrind is just glad that mostly everyone, except 50 Cent, received the memo that juicy jheri and cousin s-curl were being laid to rest.
