Our cousins in the north will be in for a treat tomorrow in Montreal when “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk,” opens at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Curated by former fashion model Thierry-Maxime Loriot, who has worked with Kate Moss, Burberry and Mario Testino, the show is a retrospective of the 59-year-old French designer’s work since she entered the fashion world as a designer for Pierre Cardin in the late ’70s.

Gaultier never went to school for fashion and therefore is untrained. He signed on with Cardin after mailing the designer his drawings and drew his influence from the street scene in London in the 1970s, particularly from punk’s Vivienne Westwood and Malcom McClaren.

Gaultier’s designs have been enjoyed by everyone including Madonna who used his costumes for her Blonde Ambition tour in the 1990s. Those costumes will also be on view and seen for the first time in years. After Montreal the exhibition will travel to Dallas and San Francisco.

If you are in Montreal, be sure to check out the exhibition.

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier runs June 17 to Oct. 2 at the Michael and Renata Hornstein Pavilion of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, 1379 Sherbrooke St. W. $15 for adults 26 to 64, with reduced rates Wednesday evening and for students and seniors.
