The NY Daily News reports:

Texas Rangers star Josh Hamilton revealed his heartbreak Friday after a fan plunged headfirst to his death while trying to snare a baseball tossed by the American League MVP.

Shannon Stone, a 39-year-old firefighter, fell from the stands at Rangers Ballpark Thursday in front of his 6-year-old son, Cooper.

“It was just hard for me, hearing the little boy screaming for his daddy after he had fallen – and then being home with my kids, really hit home last night,” Hamilton said.

“That’s one of the main things I remember. It’s definitely on my mind and in my heart. I can’t stop praying today for them.”

Stone, an 18-year veteran firefighter from Brownwood, Tex., went into full cardiac arrest in the ambulance rushing him to the hospital after his 20-foot fall in the second inning.

Hamilton said he tossed the ball in Stone’s direction after a fan yelled out, “Hey, Hamilton, how about the next one?”

“I turned around and Stone was the first guy I saw sitting there with his son,” Hamilton said, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

“I gave him a nod and I got the next one and threw it in that direction. I just remember it happened in slow motion.”

Shannon Stone’s mother said he had taken his son to the game in the hopes of snagging a ball.

“That’s what they were there for, was to catch a ball,” Suzann Stone, 63, said Friday, choking back sobs. “Cooper loves baseball and he’s a big Josh Hamilton fan.”

An anguished Hamilton said he’s planning to speak with the Stone family.

“I can’t imagine what they’re going through right now,” said Hamilton, who overcame drug and alcohol addictions to emerge as a devout Christian and an All-Star outfielder.

The reigning MVP’s bad week continued Friday night, when a foul ball he hit during the sixth inning of a game against the Oakland A’s smacked another fan in the face.

The man, who was sitting along the third-base line, needed a few stitches to close the wound, but was otherwise okay, according to Rangers officials.
