Lady Antebellum AMA Press Room Interview

Laughter and Chatter

Interviewer: Congratulations on your award…first of all. My question is…you guys are a really talented…really popular country music group, do you guys have any hip-hop musicians that you guys like or artist?

Hillary Scott: Oh yeah…..Drake…..Amazing…

Charles Kelley: Oh yeah, that new Drake record is sick, it’s so good.

Interviewer: Any other guys?

Hillary: Oh gosh…I mean…

Charles Kelley: Favorite song on what? On Drake’s album? Umm…probably for me..uh…the uh duet..not duet…he does a collaboration with Lil’ Wayne and Andre 3000…what’s the name of that song?

Interviewer: Oh…the strip club song.

Charles Kelley: Yes. [Laughter from interviewer and Lady Antebellum]…I just got it like three days ago so
I don’t know the name of the songs…but it’s like track two.

Interviewer: Thank you very much.

Charles Kelley: We’re from…we’re from Georgia….so we like Atlanta rappers.

Second Interviewer: Hey guys, Instyle magazine…you look amazing…of course I have to ask , what are you wearing…and you’re pros at this by now… so do you love getting dressed up for stuff like this? And how involved was today?

Hillary: Well honestly…I mean…we had a big fitting yesterday and there were a couple dresses that I was in between and this one…its…um… Ronnie Zekimp…I think its how you pronounce it…I hate getting it wrong…I’m sorry that I did but um [Laughs] but I just…it was easy…it’s one of those you just throw it on…it has one zipper…its not like I am all uncomfortable and this show is about having fun…in LA…its like you get to bring a little glitz you know and that’s what I tried to do…it was comfortable and still felt sexy and flattering so…

Third Interviewer: I was wondering what it felt like carrying one of country music’s tour spears…right now in country music? Second question, how crazy has it been to see everything come through?

[chattering, can’t quite make out what is being said]

Charles Kelley: Yeah man… its been really cool..ya know, honestly to be able to feel like we representing the country genre…and there are so many artist…seeing Dan Perry perfom tonight, put on a great performance… Taylor Swift, um…all of these artist…I think the genre has just open itself up a lot te sound of it is definitely reaching a little bit more of a contemporary audience..its great ya know because the sound is evolving from…well there’s still very traditional country music as well that works and it’s just that I don’t know it’s got a ride range of styles in this genre. So I think that’s why it’s just appealing I guess to some many people.

Fourth Interviewer: You guys are so accomplished, what new goals do you guys have for yourselves?

Charles Kelley: Tour, Tour, Tour! Yes, we actually just stared a brand new headlining tour…for us you know…we just want to be able to sell tickets…we just put on sale a couple of days ago tickets, Staples Center here in LA…and had good first day sales…just excited to be out there and start playing at some of these arenas…for the first time…

[chattering, can’t quite make out what is being said]

Charles Kelley: Tickets are at a reasonable price point… [Laughter]

Fifth Interviewer: You were just talking about picking your dress for the night…do you have any style tips? And also being comfortable, do you think that you will keep to that for your wedding?

Hilary: Yes. No truly, whenever I went and met with a few people to try and figure out what dress I wanted, one of the one things that I said was I want to be able to bend down and pick up a kid, in my dress…I don’t wanna like…waddle..you know, so that’s huge, that’s so important…I mean if you are uncomfortable…you see it on your face which goes into the style tip of take risks but make sure that you are being true to who you are and like everyone always says…you are the dress, don’t let the dress wear you.

Sixth Interviewer: Hey Hillary, I’m Jessica from Glamour…you’re such an inspiration to so many women and I was wondering what women inspire you or what women are you obsessed with ad why?

Hillary: Um… [Charles interrupts “I can tell you which one I am.” Everyone laughs] I mean…gosh I think…Beyonce is one of my biggest influences just from not only on stage..but how she carries herself off…I think that she has nothing but class and has this ability to be extremely sexy without it coming off offensive ever…she’s just brilliant…I think one of my biggest influences is my mom..I look up to her and just her outlook on life…but um a lot of people and just being born and raised in the music industry…the country music industry..um I’ve gotten to know Reba very well and she’s just a brilliant business woman and she also is a great advice giver…I was actually just talking to everybody in the band period and one of the things I said was um…she always says exactly what you need to hear at that moment…so Reba for sure. You’re welcome.

Seventh Interviewer: Congratulations on your award. Any dream collaborations you know in the future obviously for next records?

Charles Kelley: Adele’s at the top of our list…I think. Paul McCartney, maybe Drake…[Hillary: Drake…. I’d love that.] It’ll be kind of cool to see what we could come up with. Would be, never know man…we are wide open.

Eighth Interviewer: Uh Charles, you and Dave have done a bunch of like outside genres, songwriting, co-writes…what’s the number one thing that makes you want to get in on a co-write?

Charles Kelley: Well, I think for us…we just love writing…it all starts with a song and whatever genre it is I think everybody…you know it’s all about the song first and foremost and you know we love writing melodies…in pop music we really feel like we can branch out when we do that…and we wrote a song Parachute that’s out on the radio right now and it’s just fun for us to express that other side of us as songwriters.

Unknown voice: One more question…

Interviewer: Who’s going to be performing at the wedding?

Hillary: Oh gosh…[laughter] they will be definitely crashing the band for sure…but honestly I have someone in mind but I haven’t asked them yet…it’s going to be someone that I have a personal connection to…whose a dear friend and luckily we have a job and live in a world where a lot of my really good friends are talented…so I’ll um…I haven’t asked him that yet..Drake…no yeah I’m kidding [Laughs]

[Chattering, can’t quite make out what is being said]

Hillary: I’ll crash my own wedding.

Interviewer: Jason Al Dean Dirt Road Anthem with Ludacris, would Drake be you guys artist of choice?

Hillary: Yeah. [Charles: “At the top of my list as far as…” interrupted by Hillary] and we actually got to meet him at the Grammys and he was really nice and our seats was really close to one another so…um definitely I would love that. Thank you.

Audience claps.
