When Neil Patrick Harris tells his 15-month-old twins the story of how he met their father, the darling shoot in this month’s issue of OUT magazine is sure to be the centerpiece of the conversation.

STORY: Neil Patrick Harris Talks His Dope Kids And Run DMC

In a complete role reversal from the womanizing character Neil Patrick Harris plays in the CBS sitcom, How I Met Your Mother, Neil is featured in the monthly magazine, detailing the highs and lows of his relationship with his “better half,” David Burtka.

STORY: Neil Patrick Harris Can Wed David Burtka, Finally!

In a style reminiscent of personal wedding vows, the couple tells OUT magazine about their unwavering, yet very complicated, love for one another.

Neil on his feelings for David:

“There’s something kinetic about him and his being. He’s classically sexy, yet he’s very much a boy in his energy. It’s a great dynamic. When I see people who are equally attractive, they tend to seem quiet and kind of Marlboro Man-y, and David’s the antithesis of that. He’s more like Tigger. I’m, in turn, very introspective – the thinker, rather than the doer. … We’re hyper similar and also incredibly opposite.

David on his feelings for Neil:

“Without him, I can’t breathe. The biggest thing is that he makes me laugh, but he’s also smart. He can do everything. I’m not kidding; I think he’s half robot. He makes me a little more grounded, and I bring out the wild side in him. Sometimes I’m deeply in love with David and head-over-heels, and sometimes I question whether it’s going to work out and is meant to be. It’s more good times than bad, but it’s not always good.”

The two also share their dismay for the word partner and their future plans for marriage:

“I’m not the biggest fan of the word ‘partner’: It either means that we run a business together or we’re cowboys. ‘Boyfriend’ seems fleeting, like maybe we met two weeks ago. I’ve been saying ‘better half’ for as long as I’ve been able to. I think it’s a little self-deprecating and clearly defines that we’re in a relationship, but it would be nice to say ‘my husband.'”

It isn’t very often that we get such an in-depth look at a couple’s relationship from their point of view, and not from the narrator of an “E! True Hollywood Story.” Kudos to the pair for being so open with their fans.
