Last week, footage of Kendrick Lamar performing a new Pharrell-produced track titled “Staircases” hit the ‘net.

Once the blogosphere got hold of the footage, everyone just assumed it was a Kendrick Lamar song.

This, however, isn’t true.

Even though Kendrick is on the track, “Staircases” really belongs to fellow Compton-native Buddy, who last year signed with Pharrell.

The song is the first track off of Buddy’s debut project, Idle Time

Over a jazzy, smooth, piano-based beat that complements both rappers well, Buddy and Kendrick spit inspiring raps about bettering themselves.

Even though Kendrick is the better known MC, Buddy doesn’t get left in the dust. Buddy raps:

“Started at the surface and my goal was up. Cause once you stay down then you going to get stuck. And I’m just trying to climb and grind at the same time, dangling off rooftops is what I call hang time. Walking though the hall, counting my flaws. My ego got caught in the elevator wall. Got it out, raised it to the rooftop. Damn, got to take the ladder because the escalator jammed.”
