I don’t normally write about a professional athlete’s personal life. I don’t delight in their personal failures like some other writers. It’s not in my makeup.

So why am I writing about Deion Sanders and the alleged attack on him by his estranged wife Pilar Sanders and her friend? Because the reaction to what he did after that attack has been so mean and spiteful it has shocked me. There has been more blame put on Deion than on Pilar. People are acting like he did something wrong.

I am here to tell you that Deion Sanders did the right thing. He was in a no-win situation and he did the right thing.

Deion alleges that Pilar and her friend attacked him in front of his children. They came in and attacked him while he was in his bedroom. The police were called and Pilar was eventually arrested for assault.

There has been so much negative reaction towards Deion you would think he attacked Pilar and her friend.

People are actually calling him “soft” and “a little bitch” for letting Pilar and her friend beat him up. What was he supposed to do? If he fought back and hurt either one of them he would be called a wife beater. You can believe that.

Deion is getting ridiculed for showing restraint. That’s what’s so unbelievable to me. He had enough foresight to know that if he retaliated, this would be a whole different narrative today. We would be talking about how out of control Deion is. We’d be comparing him to Chris Brown and Metta World Peace. But he didn’t do that and people are questioning his manhood.

I hate to tell you this, but men don’t hit women. Period. There are no situations where that is okay.

Some say it was wrong for Deion to go public with this on Twitter. They say he should have kept it private. I understand the sentiment behind it, but they’re wrong.

As soon as he called 911 to report the attack, it became public. It was only a matter of time before that call would be made public. This whole sordid affair would become public whether Deion tweeted or not. And I think it was smart of him to do that. It’s important for him to get his side of the story out there. He was merely protecting himself.

If I was going through a contentious divorce, Like Deion, I would document everything I possibly could. You never know what allegations are going to be levied against you by your soon-to-be ex-wife.

One if the biggest criticisms of Deion has to do with him involving the kids in this. He tweeted out a picture of him and his two boys filing out police reports. (That picture and some other tweets have been deleted from Deion’s timeline today.) I say that Pilar and her friend got the kids involved in this when they attacked their father right in front of them. They were witnesses to their father’s assault. They were involved from the get go.

I think we are forgetting who is the victim here. Deion Sanders was attacked. His children had to witness that attack. And all this happened because Pilar Sanders couldn’t control herself. Let’s keep our eye on the ball, folks.
