If you’ve seen any of Sacha Baron Cohen‘s previous characters, including Ali G., Borat and Bruno, you know that there’s rarely a feeling of disappointment with his hilariously ridiculous personalities.
Cohen has tried a new format for his new movie The Dictator. He still goes around town in character, but this movie has real actors and more importantly, a script.
The movie has been heavily promoted the past few months but some critics are already calling it out, saying the humor is dry and we’ve seen it all before.

The real mistake was moving away from Cohen’s familiar documentary-style movies, which involved real people and real actions and reactions.
It is not as much fun to see actors’ scripted reactions compared to seeing Borat in touch with real life, or Ali G. interviewing an unsuspecting celebrity.

Don’t get me wrong, I will still see The Dictator and it will probably be very funny, but it is not the same humor we have come to expect from a Cohen movie.
This is the reason, I believe, that the movie is getting these mixed reviews.
If it was anyone else’s movie, the critics would be raving about it, but Cohen has set the bar so high for himself that we see this movie as sub-par compared to his previous ones.

He has created a brand that we are so used to that if we see him shy away from it, we will be highly disappointed.
In his self-proclaimed third interview out of character, Cohen told the Today show this morning that he shied away from his old ways for his own good.
He explained:
“The movies that I did up till now, they involved real people, so we wanted to limit the exposure for lawsuits,” he said. “At the moment, I think I have the Guinness world record for being the most sued actor in history.”
This is a valid reason to leave what he and all his fans are used to in the dust, but we can only hope he keeps bringing us more and more hilarious characters.
If he is indeed never looking back, Cohen needs to create an additional style that he can call his own.
