With the release of this year’s film Battleship on Blu-ray 8/28, we saw some of our favorite actors, including Brooklyn Decker, Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna and Alexander Skarsgård take on the roles of heroic military personnel to defend the country against evil.

In the film, a fleet of ships is tasked to engage in an epic battle with a mysterious armada of unknown origins in order to discover and thwart their destructive goals.
While real-life military personnel don’t necessarily have to thwart superhuman forces, they do sometimes become celebrities!

Bill Cosby:
Bill Cosby’s name may cause the Jello theme song to loop in your mind, but before he was the funny man he is today, he played an integral role in the U.S. Navy.
After dropping out of high school, Bill Cosby enlisted in the Navy in 1956. While in the Navy, the soon-to-be-celeb trained as a hospital corpsman and served aboard ships and at the Marine base at Quantico, Virginia, before being sent to Bethesda Naval Hospital, assigned to work with Korean War casualties. In 1960, Cosby was honorably discharged after four years of military service and enrolled in Temple University in Philadelphia.
Shaggy:
After moving to America from his native Jamaica to pursue his musical endeavors, Shaggy found himself down on his luck and having a rough year when it came to music. In order to compensate and get his mind straight, the eventual chart topper joined the Marines in 1988. Two years later, he found himself in the Gulf War, a life-changing experience that helped the reggae singer lock in his music dreams and aspirations.
Montel Williams:
It is no coincidence that talk show host Montel Williams is so well spoken on television. It was a long road paved by the Navy that got him there. Montel enlisted in the U.S. Marines after graduating high school in 1974, where he was promoted to platoon guide soon after basic training and eventually recommended to the Naval Academy Preparatory, which then brought him to the U.S. Naval Academy. After graduating in 1980, he became the first black enlisted marine to complete and graduate both the Academy Prep School and Annapolis. He left the navy with the rank of lieutenant and found his motivational speaker calling soon after.
These brave men deserve to be saluted for their courageous actions during their call of duty, as well as the brave men and women who are across the seas, protecting our country every day, battling against those who wish to bring destruction.
