The Fearless Four, Furious 5, Sugarhill Gang and The Funky 4 + 1 are just a few crews that were doing their thing early on. Fast forward a few years and you had crews like BDP, Native Tongue, Bootcamp Clik and of Wu-Tang Clan.

In the late 90s, artists began getting label deals that took the crew to a whole new level. Rappers like Jay-Z and 50 Cent began signing their crew to deals making things much more official. With higher stakes and added pressure, rap beefs have become bitter rivalries between crews – as we’ve seen proof of at almost every Source or BET Hip Hop awards show.

Today, every rapper has a crew that they are affiliated with. It’s almost essential for survival in the game and it has helped create some classic records. Artist that may not have gotten the attention on his or her own have been able to use their affiliation to help push them into the mainstream.
