Eighteen people have already died in Massachusetts from an outbreak of the flu that officials are calling the worst in recent history.

The outbreak has led Boston to declare a public health emergency and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say that 41 states are experiencing the widespread flu activity.

Boston, however, is among the worst hit city so far. The city has had 700 documented cases of the flu already, 10 times as many as the 2011-2012 flu season (which had 70 documented cases).

Getting a flu shot?

The CDC estimates that 128 million doses of the flu vaccine have been administered this month; 95 percent of the 135 million doses that manufacturers plan on making this year.

That means get to your nearest clinic, because it looks like the flu is spreading far and wide this season.
