Police have arrested a man who stabbed a deaf man who used sign language that was mistaken as gang signs in Burlington, North Carolina.

Terrance Ervin Daniels, 45 years old, was using sign language with another deaf man, when a third person named Robert Jarell Neal saw them and stabbed the other deaf man several times with a kitchen knife.

According to CBS Local, a neighbor spotted the crime scene and called 911.

Daniels is currently in stable condition at a hospital in Chapel Hill after the incident occurred on Wednesday.

According to Daily News:

Police arrested 22-year Robert Jarell Neal and charged him with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and felony assault on a handicapped person. He’s being held in the Alamance County jail. It’s not known if Neal has an attorney.
