Keeping with tradition, the first couple attended the inaugural prayer service at the National Cathedral on Tuesday.

But this inaugural event was no ordinary Sunday service. Keeping with one of the themes of gay equality in his acceptance speech, Obama made sure to practice what he preached.

Rev. Nancy Wilson of the Metropolitan Community Churches (MMC) participated in the interfaith prayer services on Tuesday. Wilson is openly gay and the MMC has a specific outreach to LGBT communities.

“It is profoundly meaningful to read the Bible during President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden’s second inaugural interfaith service,” said Wilson. “As I read, I will remember the hands laid on me seven years ago in this very cathedral by faith leaders who called me to serve all of God’s beautifully diverse children, including LGBT people. President Obama prayerfully and respectfully stood up for LGBT equality during his campaign, and I am proud to stand with him.”

The cathedral where the prayer services are being held announced earlier this month that it would now host same-sex marriages in the church.

The President and First Lady were greeted by singing from the Washington Performing Arts Society’s Children of the Gospel Choir.

Reverend Adam Hamilton, from the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, was scheduled to deliver the main sermon.

Even when getting their prayer on, looks like the first couple are sending a message to our country about how this presidency will play out!
