The First Family has quite the influence on the fashion realm.

Whether it be items that are off the rack like the J. Crew selection of shoes, belt and gloves that she wore on the Capitol stairs, or custom-made, like her Thom Browne coat and Jason Wu gown, when it comes to style power, Michelle Obama and her girls have got it.

So much so, that J. Crew creative director Jenna Lyons is retiring the items the First Family wore to their inaugural festivities!

Yep that’s right, the items that were still on the shelves will be allowed to sell out (as they surely will) and then taken out of production in respect for the First Family’s legacy.

Like Jason Wu, Lyons only learned the FLOTUS was wearing her designs when she watched Michelle walk out of the Capitol building in a J. Crew belt, shoes and gloves, followed by 14-year-old Malia in a dress, coat, gloves, and scarf by the label.

During an appearance on the TODAY Show, Jenna made it clear that J. Crew isn’t going to capitalize on the big day by stocking their stores with the First Family’s favorite styles. “Obviously there are people who want to have a taste or a part of what [Michelle Obama] is wearing,” she said, “but most often she’s purchased it in previous seasons.”

And it turns out the belt that caused so much commentary was actually not a belt.

Jenna explained:

“That belt was actually a sash. She fashioned it into a belt around the coat. We won’t rerun that. She did her own thing to that, and out of respect, we’ll let her have her that moment.”

And a moment she is indeed having! Check out the interview with every designer Michelle wore on the big day in the video above.
