Voter disenfranchisement isn’t nearly as bad in America as it is in Kenya.

As the people of Kenya gathered to place their votes in Africa’s first presidential election in five years, they were attacked by 200 armed members of the separatists group -the Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) – with guns, machetes, and bow and arrows. There are 19 reported dead.

Four police officers are among the deceased, as the suspects set up a trap within the city of Mombasa in the early hours, according to Inspector General David Kimaiyo.

The MRC believes Kenya’s coast should be an independent county. Their seek and destroy mentality is not fueled by religious beliefs, but anger towards political leaders in Nairobi. The MRC see them as selfish politicians who have taken the coast’s land for themselves.

Two of the country’s top presidential candidates spoke out abut the violence, calling it a “heinous act of aggression” during a historic exercise.

Determined to keep voters safe, 400 police officers have been flown into Mombasa and coastal movement has been limited.

Although the deaths and attacks frightened the people of Kenya, voting lines remained long, proving that no weapons formed against them shall prosper.

Voter George Kimoi, 42, waited two hours to vote. “I felt it was important to wait and vote today because we need a new government,” he said.

Results of the polls are not expected until Tuesday or Wednesday.

We hope the winning candidate can provide a better life for those in Kenya. Family and friends of those lost are in our prayers.
