Not cancer? Not a severe infection?
Sources in Venezuela are reporting that President Hugo Chavez died of a massive heart attack after battling an unspecified cancer in the pelvic region.
Gen. Jose Ornella told the Associated Press that although the leader could not audibly speak, he mouthed with his lips a last call for help.
“He couldn’t speak but he said it with his lips … ‘I don’t want to die. Please don’t let me die,’ because he loved his country, he sacrificed himself for his country.”
The general had spent the last two years with Chavez and did not leave his side in his final moments.
Ornella also told sources that at the time of Chavez’s death, his cancer was at a very advanced stage, although he did not respond when asked if the cancer had spread to Chavez’s lungs.
Despite his polarizing legacy, we send our thoughts and prayers to Venezuela during this transitional and grieving period.
