Rutgers Basketball Coach, Mike Rice, has been fired after a series of videos depicting him verbally and physically abusing players was released by ESPN. 

Rice is filmed hurling basketballs at players’ faces and groins and yelling homophobic slurs.

The University made this statement on Twitter:

Based upon recently revealed information and a review of previously discovered issues, Rutgers has terminated the contract of Mike Rice.”

Many people have issued statements about the scandal, including Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti.

“I am responsible for the decision to attempt a rehabilitation of Coach Rice,” said Pernetti. “Dismissal and corrective action were debated in December and I thought it was in the best interest of everyone to rehabilitate, but I was wrong. Moving forward, I will work to regain the trust of the Rutgers community.”

As far as Rice himself, he released the follow statement so far:

“I can’t say anything right now, except I’m sorry. … I’ve let everybody down.”
