It seems like a hard tale to believe nearly two decades later: 18-year-old ambitious Atlanta teen, Jermaine Dupri, scopes out two young boys in a shopping mall who simply look like they have what is takes to be in a rap group, and makes them Billboard topping stars who break records, tour with Michael Jackson, and have everyone wearing their clothes backwards.

The story reached great heights, and recently an even greater demise, when one half of Kris Kross, Chris Kelly, was found dead in his Atlanta home.

The hip-hop community deeply mourned the tragedy and today, Atlanta showed its respect as the body of the Kris Kross member was laid to rest. But in the sadness we must always remember the happiness.

Rather than remember Chris Kelly as a life gone too soon, let’s celebrate his legacy by taking a look at some of the fashion trends that were the hottest when Kris Kross was at their absolute pinnacle of stardom.

Get ready for the ultimate Throwback Thursday.

The year: 1992

The Trends: unforgettable.

Backwards Clothing: Wearing clothing in reverse was one of the most recognizable hip-hop fashion culture trends directly related to Kris Kross. Check out what else was cool in 1992.

LA Gear’s L.A. Lights: Cool for fashion, bad for running from the cops and/or playing an innocent game of hide and seek.

Cross Colours: This clothing line was more than fashion, it was a movement, ya dig? Carl Jones and T.J. Walker cooked up the line as a way to “educate and elevate” through fashion.

Bandanas: Tupac wasn’t the only one who kept it tight in a bandana.

Bright colored biker shorts: They knew no age, sex, weight or gender in the early ’90s.

Zubaz: Cousins to the bright colored biker shorts were the Zubaz, made famous in their zebra prints that came in a multitude of colors, and from what we hear, their extreme comfort.

Neon Windbreakers: If you didn’t own one of these, you were not a true child of the nineties.

Overalls: And one strap better be down.

Air Jordans: The sneakers, and the man, but in fashion, it was mostly the sneakers.

We could go on for days with the early ’90s nostalgia, but we just wanted to drop a reminder of the good ol’ days in Chris’ memory.
