On the heels of President Barack Obama‘s talk with the families of Newtown about his proposed gun-control legislation plans yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev) said that he would look to bring new gun-control legislation to a vote as early as Thursday.

But while many are celebrating the progress, a group of at least 14 Republicans are trying to shut the whole operation down.

However, Vice President Joe Biden isn’t about to let that happen.

Blasting opponents of new gun control measures for being in a “time warp,” Vice President Joe Biden said Tuesday that a potential filibuster of pending gun legislation would be “embarrassing” for America’s reputation around the world.

“What an embarrassing thing to say,” Biden said of the stated intent of 14 senators to prevent a vote on new background check legislation.

Republicans are complaining that it would curb the rights of the law-abiding, while doing little to reduce crime.

“The more people learn about the consequences of current gun control proposals, the less they will support the new restrictions,” Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, said.

If Lee and his colleagues succeed, their objections would require any bill to garner 60 votes, a heavy lift for Reid and the White House.

However, that doesn’t seem too likely. Just today, a group of Republicans opposing the filibuster announced their intention to strengthen Reid’s plans to move forward with a vote.

One by one – starting with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., saying on Sunday that he would not support a filibuster – Republican senators have said they favor allowing an up-or-down vote on the new gun proposals, as long they are allowed to offer amendments during the process. A handful of GOP senators said on Tuesday alone that they would not join a filibuster, enabling Reid to begin the process of bringing one of the Obama administration’s top domestic priorities to a vote.

Those 14 might want to have a seat now!
