On Monday morning, as reports of rapid gunfire continued and billows of smoke rose from the Nairobi, Kenya mall where terrorists opened fire on Saturday, the Interior CNG Ministry of Kenya confirmed that the death toll has increased to 62.

However, the fate of the hostages is unknown.

A Kenyan military spokesman Monday said that the fate of hostages inside a mall besieged by al-Qaida-linked terrorists was not clear despite earlier statements that “most” hostages had been rescued.

“We are yet to get confirmation from what’s happening in the building,” Col. Cyrus Oguna, a Kenyan military spokesman, told The Associated Press.

At daybreak, as military helicopters circled above the mall, about five minutes of sustained gunfire was heard coming from the building, indicating that at least one of the estimated 10-15 gunmen who attacked the mall on Saturday was still on the loose.

There are also reports that at least three of the gunmen are American.

Al-Shabab, the Somali al Qaeda affiliate, has claimed that there are three American gunmen involved in the standoff at the Westgate mall in Kenya. The group tweeted the names of the men, who were listed as Ahmed Mohamed Isse of St. Paul, Minnesota, Abdifatah Osman Keenadiid of Minneapolis, and Gen Mustafe Noorudiin of Kansas City.
